  13. Yes, Salt can Salt itself!
  14. ## Note: As for salt `3006` and new `onedir` distribution method,
  15. upstream repositories of saltstack have changed naming conventions
  16. to get latest binaries and keys.
  17. If you depends on versions of salt from older repositories,
  18. please stick with version 1.x.x of this formula.

  82. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  83. Undo the effects of ``salt.pkgrepo`` on Debian, RedHat, and SuSE.
  84. ``salt.formulas``
  85. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  86. Clone selected `Salt formulas
  87. <http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/development/conventions/formulas.html>`_
  88. Git repositories under ``/srv/formulas`` and makes them available in the relevant ``file_roots`` settings. Please note that in order for ``file_roots`` to be updated, ``salt.master`` must be called after ``salt.formulas``. For example:
  89. ::
  90. base:
  91. 'saltmain':
  92. - salt.formulas
  93. - salt.master
  94. Pillar data can be used to customize all paths, URLs, etc. Here's a minimal pillar sample installing two formulas in the base environment:
  95. ::
  96. salt_formulas:
  97. list:
  98. base:
  99. - salt-formula
  100. - openssh-formula
  101. See pillar.example for an exhaustive list of settings available via pillar. Note
  102. that by default this state:
  103. - downloads the latest formulas from the `saltstack-formulas project
  104. <https://github.com/saltstack-formulas>`_ on GitHub.
  105. - does not update the local repositories after the initial clone.
  106. This is a safety measure since you do not control how the official
  107. repositories evolve.
  108. If you configure the state to download the formulas from repositories that
  109. you control, then you can safely enable the
  110. ``salt_formulas:git_opts:default:update`` pillar setting to ``True``.
  111. Configuration
  112. -------------
  113. Every option available in the templates can be set in pillar. Settings under 'salt' will be overridden by more specific settings under ``salt['master']``, ``salt['minion']`` or ``salt['cloud']``. Options specified in ``salt['minion']`` which are not present in the default configuration file will be added to the end of the configuration file.
  114. ::
  115. salt:
  116. ret_port: 4506
  117. master:
  118. user: saltuser
  119. ...
  120. minion:
  121. user: saltuser
  122. ...
  123. cloud:
  124. providers: ec2
  125. ...
  126. Extending
  127. ---------
  128. Additional templates can be added by the user under salt/files/minion.d and master.d. This might be useful if, for example, a recently-added configuration option is not yet provided by the default template.
  129. Vagrant
  130. -------
  131. Executing the provided `Vagrantfile <http://www.vagrantup.com/>`_ will create a Ubuntu 14.04 VM, add the default Saltstack Repository and install the current stable version.
  132. The folders inside the VM will be set up in a way that enables you to simply execute 'sudo salt "*" state.highstate' to apply the salt formula to the VM, using the pillar.example config. You can check /etc/salt/ for results.
  133. Remember, you will have to run ``state.highstate`` or ``state.sls salt.(master|minion|cloud)`` manually.
  134. MacOS Support
  135. -------------
  136. As MacOS has no native package management that pkg.installed can leverage appropriately, and brew does not count, the salt.minion state manages salt minion package upgrades by way of .pkg file download which is then installed using the macpackage.installed state.
  137. salt-minion packages on MacOS will not be upgraded by default. To enable package management you must set the following at a minimum,
  138. ::
  139. install_packages: True
  140. version: 2017.7.4
  141. salt_minion_pkg_source: https://repo.saltproject.io/osx/salt-2017.7.4-py3-x86_64.pkg
  142. install_packages must indicate that the installation of a package is desired. If so, version will be used to compare the version of the installed .pkg against the downloaded one. If version is not set and a salt.pkg is already installed the .pkg will not be installed again.
  143. A future update to the formula may include extraction of version from the downloaded .pkg itself; but for the time being you MUST set version to indicate what you believe it to be.
  144. Refer to pillar.example for more information.
  145. Testing
  146. -------
  147. Linux testing is done with ``kitchen-salt``.
  148. Requirements
  149. ^^^^^^^^^^^^
  150. * Ruby
  151. * Docker
  152. .. code-block:: bash
  153. $ gem install bundler
  154. $ bundle install
  155. $ bin/kitchen test [platform]
  156. Where ``[platform]`` is the platform name defined in ``kitchen.yml``,
  157. e.g. ``debian-9-2019-2-py3``.
  158. ``bin/kitchen converge``
  159. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  160. Creates the docker instance and runs the ``salt`` main states, ready for testing.
  161. ``bin/kitchen verify``
  162. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  163. Runs the ``inspec`` tests on the actual instance.
  164. ``bin/kitchen destroy``
  165. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  166. Removes the docker instance.
  167. ``bin/kitchen test``
  168. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  169. Runs all of the stages above in one go: i.e. ``destroy`` + ``converge`` + ``verify`` + ``destroy``.
  170. ``bin/kitchen login``
  171. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  172. Gives you SSH access to the instance for manual testing.
  173. Testing with Vagrant
  174. --------------------
  175. Windows/FreeBSD/OpenBSD testing is done with ``kitchen-salt``.
  176. Requirements
  177. ^^^^^^^^^^^^
  178. * Ruby
  179. * Virtualbox
  180. * Vagrant
  181. Setup
  182. ^^^^^
  183. .. code-block:: bash
  184. $ gem install bundler
  185. $ bundle install --with=vagrant
  186. $ bin/kitchen test [platform]
  187. Where ``[platform]`` is the platform name defined in ``kitchen.vagrant.yml``,
  188. e.g. ``windows-81-latest-py3``.
  189. Note
  190. ^^^^
  191. When testing using Vagrant you must set the environment variable ``KITCHEN_LOCAL_YAML`` to ``kitchen.vagrant.yml``. For example:
  192. .. code-block:: bash
  193. $ KITCHEN_LOCAL_YAML=kitchen.vagrant.yml bin/kitchen test # Alternatively,
  194. $ export KITCHEN_LOCAL_YAML=kitchen.vagrant.yml
  195. $ bin/kitchen test
  196. Then run the following commands as needed.
  197. ``bin/kitchen converge``
  198. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  199. Creates the Vagrant instance and runs the ``salt`` main states, ready for testing.
  200. ``bin/kitchen verify``
  201. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  202. Runs the ``inspec`` tests on the actual instance.
  203. ``bin/kitchen destroy``
  204. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  205. Removes the Vagrant instance.
  206. ``bin/kitchen test``
  207. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  208. Runs all of the stages above in one go: i.e. ``destroy`` + ``converge`` + ``verify`` + ``destroy``.
  209. ``bin/kitchen login``
  210. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  211. Gives you RDP/SSH access to the instance for manual testing.
